Mitt, You Don't Bring Us Flowers Anymore

Gov_Mitt_Romney.jpgMassachusetts voters know what it's like to get dumped. They fell in love with a handsome, rugged cool kid and accepted his class ring. Then, all of a sudden, he stopped returning their phone calls.

Sometimes, he'd pass by in the hall and make small talk, but he was always making sure that others were watching, just so the observers knew he was "letting the voters down easy." But the news that he was moving on from Massachusetts to the head cheerleader still stung.

And now, everyone knows how foolish Massachusetts feels - because soon-to-be former governor Mitt Romney wasn't even in the state for 212 days out of the year.

Ouch. That tidbit of information lets people know exactly how seriously Romney took his job as governor. The Globe tracked all Romney's trips and summed up 2006 as his "one-man barnstorming show."

Now that Bostonist knows how often Romney was off jet-setting and courting wealthier pals, it's easier to feel a little sorry for the dour Kerry Healey. Her facial expression probably reflected a broken heart rather than constipation.

Of course, Romney's travels might not amount to anything given the massive internal bleeding the Republican party faced this year, and Barack Obama makes Romney look like a wallflower - so maybe all this social maneuvering will blow up on him, leaving Massachusetts voters with a little smile of revenge.

If he's going to dump us, he should at least make a successful run at the cheerleader. Considering how poorly his run at the nomination has been received, he makes us feel even uglier.

Um ... if I only worked for 100 days out of the year at my job, and spent the rest of the time looking for a new job, I'd hardly be called president. I'd be called unemployed. Moreover, is it just me, or does perhaps he owe the Commonwealth of Massachusetts a refund on his salary? Last I checked, one should get paid for what one works.
