Sports Redux: Beat LA? Please?

hollywood.jpg
The Celtics have a chance to make history tonight, but it's not the kind of history that will make anyone proud. As you're probably aware, if the Celtics lose to the Clippers tonight (completing the L.A. Sweep), they will be the owners of the longest losing streak in franchise history. 14 in a row. How...Clipper-esque. But the C's will make their presence felt at the All-Star Game; there are rumors that Gerald Green may well be selected for the Slam Dunk Contest.

But maybe it would be a fitting epitaph for the 2006-07 season if the only Boston representative at the All-Star game was Courtney, from the Celtics Dancers. We're sorry, Red...we're so, so, sorry. If not for that, then for the cheering of Kobe Bryant at the Garden.

Down the hall, the Bruins are helping turn Boston's attention firmly toward the Red Sox equipment truck. They fell 3-1 against Buffalo, and the city of Boston owes thanks to the woeful Philadelphia Flyers, the only team keeping us out of Double Last Place in the Eastern Conferences. The Red Sox had better send jingling their truck keys soon, or it's going to be a long few weeks.

However, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright; hordes of Chicagoans and Hoosiers are descending and sizzling on Miami Beach, along with erstwhile Boston Sports Guy Bill Simmons. He's in his element when he's dazzled by the world around him; so far this week, he's been dazzled by Miami Beach, busy on Media Day, and slightly terrified by the sports-radio scene.

Jackie MacMullan has a long, scary look at Patriots linebacker Ted Johnson's cloudy retirement, his battling back from concussions, and his struggles with depression and addiction.

The Red Sox are having their lottery for the chance to buy coveted tickets like Opening Day, the Yankee games, and the Green Monster/RF roof seats. You can enter the lottery here until 5 P.M. on Tuesday. The lottery system is meant to make the distribution of these tickets fair and equitable to everyone, or you can wait until 5:02 P.M. on Tuesday and buy them by the dozen from ticket agencies' websites.

Until then, you can watch this Japanese beer commercial featuring Daisuke Matsuzaka drinking a beer, then putting on his Sox uniform. Oh, man...the truck is gassed up, right, Theo?

The Celtics have some young talent in place, and a high draft pick (assuming that Danny Ainge doesn't panic and trade it), so there is some hope for the future. I'm not sure what hope there is for the Bruins; they look like they can be a bad team for years to come. How soon 'til spring training, again?

Props to the Celtics! If you're going to lose, lose better than anyone else. Do it grandly. As the king of the "terrifying sports-radio scene," Jim Rome, always says, it takes a lot of sack to get together and lose with such unerring style. May our boys lose and lose for many years to come, as I'm sure they will!!!
