Phil vs. Sting: Reunion Cagematch

phil%20collins.jpgHey you! Yeah, you, the one who's been belting out "Roxanne" while preparing for The Police's Fenway Park gigs in July. Phil Collins has a message for you: you best be brushing up on his lyrics. Genesis is back.

The prog-rock Brit band announced via webcast today that it has finalized dates for the reunion tour it first mentioned back in November. Genesis' Turn It On Again Tour will unleash tunes on the masses in Europe this summer, then turn to North America in September. The Boston audience will see have its chance to see Phil, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Company at the TD Banknorth Garden on Sept. 11.

Tour promoter Michael Cohl said of today's announcement, "Genesis is absolutely one of the world's most exciting bands of all time," according to the official Genesis website. "They have always been an amazing concert experience and I'm thrilled that fans will be able to see them perform again live for the first time in 15 years."

Genesis had planned an American tour back in 1997, but cancelled the gigs after low U.S. sales of that year's Phil-less "Calling All Stations." Collins, meanwhile, performed at then-Harborlights in 1998 and then-FleetCenter in 2004, the latter a stop on what he jokingly called his Final Farewell Tour. Telling, no?

Bostonist still remembers being freaked out at the Ronald and Nancy Reagan puppets in the "Land of Confusion" video, but has belted out "I Can't Dance" too many times over the years to not know that Genesis fans are likely salivating at the thought of seeing the band at least one more time. (We are also a sucker for The Postal Service cover of "Against All Odds.") For those folks, we tell you this: tickets for the Boston show go on sale on Monday, March 12, and you can visit the Genesis site for more information.

Photo of Phil -- the man, the myth, the forehead -- from Amazon. Sure, it's from a solo album, but the band wasn't Genesis without Collins, right?
