Sports Redux: Who's Up For A 26-Mile Kayak Race?

marathon.JPGThere are two types of people in the world: those who are willing to slog through rain, wind, possible snow (hey, you never know) and agony to complete a marathon, and...the other kind. Bostonist freely admits to being the other kind. But to everyone who wills their way through this, we tip our hats, raise our glasses, and count our blessings that we'll be home watching you on TV. If you have time to fiddle with your iPod, though, Boston.com has
compiled a playlist
designed to get you through the whole thing.

The Red Sox, of course, aren't meant to go out and play when the weather's this bad. Which means Sunday was washed out and today will certainly be as well. Which means that the Red Sox didn't get to join the Major Leagues' celebration of Jackie Robinson Day, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Jackie stepping onto a Major League field for the first time and changing the course of history. Hey, maybe this weather was specially-ordered by Tom Yawkey just for that reason. In any case, players all over baseball wore #42 to honor Jackie. The good news here in Boston is that the one guy left in the majors who still wears #42 regularly, Mariano Rivera, gave up a 3-run walkoff home run to somebody named Marco Scutaro, and the Yankees lost in Oakland.

Josh Beckett for the Sox today against Ervin Santana of the Halos, unless the game is rained out, which it will be, so Beckett tomorrow night in Toronto. Where there's a retractable roof. Must be nice.

The Celtics are allowed to try again, now that they've sewn up the second-worst record in the league. Didn't help them win, though, as Orlando held off a late rally to beat the Green 88-86. Al Jefferson shook off the Hellenic Flu to play 37 minutes.

In leaguewide news, Kobe Bryant's 50 points clinched a playoff berth for the Lakers, giving all of us who feared that L.A. would fall into the lottery a sigh of relief. In NHL news, the playoffs are underway, and as soon as we get a handle on how that's going, we'll check in.

Once again, good luck and congratulations to everyone hitting the road in Hopkinton today.
