On the Other Broadway

On Broadway is premiering at the Boston Independent Film Festival today, Thursday, April 26, at 8:00 pm at the Somerville Theatre. Only rush tickets are available for the premiere, but, if you can't get in on the 26th, tickets are still available for Sunday, April 29, at 8:00 pm at the Somerville. And the Somerville has beer!

The Boston Independent Film Festival pays tribute to its home turf with tonight's world premiere of On Broadway. The locally shot comedy follows a carpenter-turned-playwright (Joey McIntyre) who stages a celebration of his late uncle's life with a performance in the back of the Skellig pub.

The story is based on the real-life story of director/writer Dave McLaughlin--he too staged a play at the Skellig's sister, the Burren. McLaughlin wrote the script in 1999 and finally gathered together the financing to make the movie. He was also able to draw in McIntyre, Eliza Dushku, Amy Poehler, and Will Arnett. Check out the trailer:

Based on the preview, On Broadway might be a bit too "heartwarming dramedy" for our tastes, but it's a movie that's easy to root for. The stars are clearly behind it, as McIntyre, Dushku, and Arnett will be at the premiere. And if you can't gate-crash the premiere, you can always catch it on Sunday. Here's the trailer:
