Boston Blotter: Schmucks on a Plane

060507_air_rage.gif--Bob Hayden - a retired Boston police officer, former Lawrence police chief, and grandpa - had to deal with some schmucks on his plane from Minnesota to Massachusetts on Saturday night. A man started to fake some sort of fit after takeoff. Flight attendants got him back into his seat, where he started yelling. Then another guy - who turned out to be the screamer's brother - joined in with a fit.

Hayden, the flight attendants, and a retired Marine couldn’t take it any more, so Hayden cuffed one of the offenders and kept an eye on them until the landing.

Some passengers were scared, but Hayden's wife wasn't: "Bob's been shot at. He's been stabbed. He's taken knives away. He knows how to handle those situations. I figured he would go up there and step on somebody's neck, and that would be the end of it."

This Hayden guy is efficient! Is he interested in rejoining the force?

When it was all over, the screamer went to the hospital to get his mental health checked out, and the other joined police.

--A 14-year-old boy was shot and killed in Brockton Sunday afternoon. The death of Marvin Constant has rattled Brockton because he's so young. Police said Constant was "known to them," which is careful code that suggests he had been in trouble before. No suspects have been arrested.

--On Sunday afternoon, two firefighters in Charlestown were trying to help a truck driver through a rotary, and four jerks in a sedan threatened one of the firefighters while he was helping the trucker back up. They must've been in some kind of hurry, but they had time to hop out of their car to beat on the firefighter.

The firefighter had to go to the hospital and wound up with a broken eye socket and 14 stitches. As for the perps, the Globe bumped the fact that all four of the men were wearing Yankees caps to the top of the column. The Herald also made sure to work that little element in.

--Yet another hit and run. Yesterday afternoon in Roslindale, a car was on the American Legion Highway when another car hit it from behind. According to the BPD report, "The impact caused the victims' motor vehicle to cross the median, roll over and end up resting on its side. The suspect motor vehicle then fled the scene." However, the impact took the bumper off the suspect's car, and police have that person's license-plate number.

A pregnant woman and a girl were injured. The police haven't found anyone yet, but they know the car that caused the whole incident was a stolen blue Ford Contour.

All charges alleged until proven under law. Image from NASA.

How pathetic that Mr. Hayden received nothing but averted eyes from all the other men on the plane who were half his age. Proof positive that we have no real men left. Kudos to Mrs. Hayden - that's one cool lady!
