Photo of the Day, October 29, 2009: Arboretum Red

D. Brim gives us another great representation of beautiful New England fall colors with this shot. Colorful gradients combine with a shallow depth of field to really isolate this wonderful piece of fall foliage.

Photo of the Day, April 28, 2009: Best Friends

Best Friends is the name of this photo from gyromcsquart and it certainly seems fitting. Taken in Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain, this shot is one of those that feels timeless. I can see these young ladies look back on this photo many years from now and getting brought back to this point in time.

Container Gardening with Slow Food Boston: Woodchucks, Bunnies, and Cabbage

It was exactly the kind of day that makes Bostonist not want to be outdoors: rainy, 40's, gray, Boston's March specialty. Yet, last Sunday we found ourselves walking up to the Arnold Arboretum's Hunnewell Visitor Center in Jamaica Plain to join a small crowd of would-be green thumbs in the name of gardening. We were there for Slow Food Boston's Seed Exchange & Container Gardening Workshop, an introduction for aspiring urban gardeners to the art of growing things you can eat with minimal square footage.

With the Communist Dracula Pageant and the Boston Pumpkin Festival happening tomorrow, Halloween festivities officially ramp up for full-blown weirdness this weekend. Inevitably, costumed folks will prance about the area, but watch out for creatures taking advantage of the season to come out of hiding and lurk amongst us. Unnamed sources spotted a sasquatch-like creature yesterday at the Arnold Arboretum. Rumors circulating among the critters at the Boston Aquarium have lead some to believe that the Atlantic harbor seals may attempt escape concealed as elephant seals. Keep your children and baby penguins away from such potential predators. And remember, there still might be some gators lurking in area waterways.

A beautiful macro shot taken at the Arnold Arboretum from post406.

This week is officially Bike Week. Regular commuters, part time enthusiasts, friends, and allies of bikers will be donning their helmets (please put on your helmet) and taking to the streets to celebrate a great form of human powered transportation. While many events take place from Boston to NoHo we're focusing our attention on those happening close to home. Free biker appreciation breakfasts and group rides have been organized. Check out the full listing at...

Not to be confused with Cambridge’s Abodeon, nor with Arnold Arboretum, Audubon Circle is located just outside Fenway in – get this - Audubon Circle. The second venture from power-duo Matt Curtis and Chris Lutes (owners of Miracle of Science, Cambridge One, and the fantastically hyped Middlesex Lounge), Audubon circle sets itself apart from the others while maintaining the hip, laid-back atmosphere one might expect from this pair of restauranteurs. The word of the day here is PANINI, but not the bulky focaccia usually associated with this sandwich. Rather, the eats at Audubon are light, exquisitely prepared, and – the best part – cheap.

Some spots in Boston are unique even when they’re not lit up. For a while we’ve referred to the house near the Arborway and Centre St. rotary as the Castle. Part Tudor design, part castle and no moat the house sits majestically during the summertime near the Arnold Arboretum and in the winter it’s all a-twinkle with more lights than we’ve seen just about anywhere outside of Somerville. Since Bostonist was cruising the Arbor/Jamaica/Riverway without our camera Bostonist’s good friend Michelle Dean snapped some photos for us. She’s an amateur photographer so the luminosity of the Castle speaks for itself her flash was barely used.
