i.am.soul wants to be taken away in today's photo. Much like Columbus, the idea of being on the sea in a sailboat is a relaxing one, and this image lends itself to those feelings. The simple composition and simple processing are terrific.

Dazzzzzle wanted a shot of planes landing over the harbor, and in this shot also incorporated some foreground elements including the passenger boat. The processing appears to be a throwback to the film era, and the colors work with the photo.
Today's photo comes from DanSuslavich who captured a beautiful night from Logan. The clouds are a great touch, and the Custom House Tower looks like it's glowing.
We already saw a beautiful sunset shot this week, so why not a beautiful sunrise? Papadune grabbed this photo at Rowes Wharf with a warm glow from the sun illuminating everything it touched. We love the way the ropes guide through the photo from right to left, and the reflections in the water.
Nicknac makes great use of negative space, and a monotone image with this shot of a channel marker.
The Tall Ships have sailed & Sail Boston 2009 has wrapped up, but they provided some spectacular photo ops for Boston's photographers. Here are some of our favorites:
Got your foam hats, flag shirts, and star-shaped glasses ready for the festivities tomorrow? No? Neither do we. Bostonist will be staying far, far away from the Esplanade tomorrow. We’ll watch the fireworks, for sure - but we’ll pass on the crowds gathering to watch the Pops. Sorry, Neil Diamond.
The Volvo Ocean Race is in town and Bostonist was lucky enough to spend a few days with the Puma Ocean Racing team. We covered the race’s arrival to Boston in a previous article here. Boston, the race’s only North American stop, has been hosting the teams for 2 weeks now at Fan Pier in the Seaport District. The crowds have been large thanks to some good weather and a unique opportunity to view these incredible boats. Puma Ocean Racing’s Boston based entry, il mostro , is magnificent to behold. Skippered by Newport, RI native Ken Reed, il mostro is a 70’ long, 14,061kg beast. Built of carbon fiber with a 105’ mast and carrying over 812m2 of sail, il mostro is of the fastest class of single hull sailboats in the world. With Puma’s eye on excellence in design, il mostro not only is a functional marvel but also a feast for the eyes. With a shoe-centric design its sleek red and black design is unlike any other boat on the water. When it comes to style, Puma has it down pat.
We've come to that time in late summer when the heat gets heavy, the cicadas sing late into the evening, and you get that nauseating feeling that the season is going to end before you’re done with it. You start running around like a 13-year-old trying to cram in every last bit of fun into the days preceding the horrors of eighth grade. Well, stop freaking out and start taking action. There is precious little time left to take advantage of a summer phenomena that combines two of summer’s best things, water and drinking while on the water: a booze cruise!
Attention anyone who "discharges your boat head," aka "unloads the contents of your boat shitter," into Boston Harbor. The party is over, and the poop police are on to you.
The Globe reports that a man was forced to cut his morning swim short today when it was discovered that he was in Boston Harbor. The Coast Guard intercepted the man, who had dived into the Harbor at Rowe's Wharf, and forced him out of the water with two high speed boats. Bostonist knows that the tourists are thick on the ground over by the waterfront this time of year, but there must be a better -- and less filthy -- shortcut.
Last Thursday, the soft light of dusk lingered in the theatre at the Institute for Contemporary Arts, where floor-to-ceiling windows let you see the Boston Harbor from two sides. Yachts, Harbor Cruisers, and sailboats passed in the distance, backgrounded by the Logan airport control tower on one side and the Custom House clock tower on the other. In the middle of the room, on an oriental rug spread across the hardwood floor, a set of five instruments sat bunched.
The Joiner is a newcomer to Boston and a compulsive joiner of clubs and organizations. He shares his experience joining Boston area groups weekly at Bostonist. Pedestrians trying to navigate the Atlantic Avenue sidewalk on the Boston Waterfront at 7:30 Sunday morning had more to contend with than the usual pointing and clicking tourists. They also had to bypass the mound of tripods and camera bags piled outside Dunkin' Donuts, where members of the Boston...
Woah! We were so busy being stranded in Boston Harbor that we totally forgot to mention that an MBTA bus smacked face-first into a wall as it exited the Pike yesterday afternoon! The bus was headed to Downtown Boston from Watertown. Seven people, including the bus driver, were brought to the hospital after suffering minor back and neck injuries. An undisclosed number of passengers stood around the bus for several minutes, shaking their heads...
Earlier today the home page of Channel 5's website carried a story about a Massachusetts bridge closure in prominent position. It's since been buried on the site. The story with the headline "Mass. Bridge Closed After Minn. Tragedy" evoked imagery of any of those bridges we reported on earlier, I-91 closures as it crisscrosses the Connecticut river, or some span over hills on Rt. 2, or even more local like the length that leads over...
Any day now, the U.S. EPA will designate Boston Harbor a "No Discharge Area."
--A deadly car crash happened early this morning on Blue Hill Avenue. One person died, and three people, including a child and a baby, went to the hospital in critical condition. The baby was in a car seat, but it was thrown from the car. Road rage allegedly caused the crash, and police have arrested 28-year-old Jason Bailey. He is being charged with "Leaving the Scene Personal Injury, Leaving Scene resulting in One Death, Operating...
Bostonist knew that with Wednesday night's Boston Pops EdgeFest finale would come a chance to see local talent (and Bostonist favorites) Mieka Pauley and Chad Perrone, but it wasn't until shortly before we braved the heat en route to Symphony Hall that we discovered that we were in store for another Boston music treat - three-fifths of the Ryan Montbleau Band (guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Ryan Montbleau, bassist Matt Gianarros and Laurence Scudder on viola), who closed out the night at the hall with a post-Pops performance.
--Yet another attack happened on the Esplanade, only this time the perp got caught. a creep attacked a woman and a child at the playground yesterday afternoon. The report says that they were sexually assaulted. WBZ specified that they were "groped." Police arrested 23-year-old Rearlimgigeazr Eshiesycapilla, a New Yorker, for the crime. Wait. Rearlimgigeazr Eshiesycapilla??? Yeah, that's the name this individual gave at first. Police were understandably dubious (so were we - come on). His...
The Boston City Council wants to follow San Francisco's footsteps and ban plastic bags from the city. Robert Consalvo (Hyde Park / Roslindale / Mattapan) is pushing the measure, and nine of twelve city councilors have offered their support. We're all for protecting the environment, but the way Robert Consalvo describes those bags, you'd think we were being attacked by plastic bags: "They blow in trees, they're floating in Boston Harbor . . . They're...
The emphasis on First Night has been as much on what you can't do as much as what you can do. So let's get what you can't do out of the way right now. Don't drive. Take public transportation. No excuses because the T will be free after 8 pm. The MBTA provides more details about the New Year's schedule here. And, as far as the law is concerned, the message is try not to...
Yesterday the fanfare that has been the opening celebration for the new ICA building in the Seaport district opened to the general public for a 12 hour free ride in the new space. The news today is that nearly 5,000 people visited the new facility over the course of the day, many of whom had positive things to say about it even after a two hour wait. The museum opened at 9 am and...
Who wants to be inside a theater in weather like this? This evening, Bostonist won't have to choose between staying outdoors, seeing a band, and enjoying some of our favorite movies: Friday 8/11 Battleship Potemkin (Bronenosets Potyomkin) ArtsUnion brings a revolt and a sinking Russian warship to Union Square. The KNOWmovement Orchestra provides ambient lighting and a live soundtrack for Eisentein's groundbreaking silent classic. Union Square, Somerville 7:30-9:30 pm, free (rain date Saturday 8/12) Battleship...
In a world where there's nothing to do but watch movies. In a city full of theaters, museums, and libraries. One moviegoer who can be in three places at once. Thursday 8/3 Stolen One of the things that endears the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum to us (along with the dim lighting, strict ban on electronic devices, and terse signage) is how the frames of missing paintings hang empty on the walls. (As per Mrs. Gardner's...
In a world where there's nothing to do but watch movies. In a city full of theaters, museums, and libraries. One moviegoer who can be in three places at once. Friday 7/28 Cubamor Gigolos, students, goddesses and tourists dally in Joshua Bee Alafia's musical, fantastical Havana. The Roxbury Film Festival is showing this and many other feature films, as well as experimental shorts, music videos, and some non-fiction: a 25-minute deocumentary called Bootyful World asks...
In a world where there's nothing to do but watch movies. In a city full of theaters, museums, and libraries. One moviegoer who can be in three places at once. This week's films are full of things Bostonist can't say no to (classic movies with classic martinis), things we couldn't stop if we tried (fate, modern architecture), and the purple chunk of the Venn diagram where those two categories overlap (zombies). Cocktails! Cary Grant! Friday...
In a world where there's nothing to do but watch movies. In a city full of theaters, museums, and libraries. One moviegoer who can be in three places at once. Friday 7/14 They Came Back (Les Revenants) The dead return by the thousands, but they're the French dead: their hunger is existential. (American and Italian zombies, with traditional brain-eating values, will return next weekend.) Museum of Fine Arts, Remis Auditorium 6 pm, $10 They Came...
Trains are safe. That's the declaration from Michael Chertoff, head of the US Department of Homeland Security, after he took a ride on the MBTA Green Line. Perhaps malicious individuals looking to cause harm to Boston's subway system have also been thwarted by the introduction of the CharlieTicket system. If regular riders of the T, occasional patrons, and tourists are finding the new fare system a little cumbersome there maybe a built-in safety factor preventing...
It's a good week to take the whole week off. Well, is there such a thing as a bad week to take off? Grilled meats will be invading your pores for the first time in such a heavy dose since Memorial Day, which was only about a month ago. In addition to this weeks picks for some of the great shows creeping up on us in Boston we'd like to point you over to a little fifty state musical roundup on the internets. Trees lounge has gotten 23 states done in the 50 state project. Celebrate your independence my checking out some Massachusetts themed tunes (some of them are pretty borderline on the whole "theme" but we'll cut him some slack for finding 60 songs with MP3s to download)
