So said Jonathan Papelbon afterwards. And if you're one of the millions who figured that (hour-long rain delay) + (10-1 lead) = (bedtime), we understand. Unfortunately, among the snoozing millions were the Sox bullpen, who turned a 10-1 lead into a devastating 11-10 loss in no time. This was ugly.

We're not going to talk too much more about yesterday's big news. Bill Simmons gets really sad, and Dan Shaughnessy must be trapped under something; it's the only explanation why he's not on Page One and all over this. The Red Sox react. Other than that, let's move on until the news breaks that Manny actually was trying to get pregnant.

It's tied. But not in the way you'd expect. Sure, Ray Allen had a good shooting night, and Rajon Rondo notched his third triple-double in the playoffs - those are the kinds of things you expect to see in a win, especially one as lopsided as last night's 112-94 triumph.

Well, that was a letdown.

Eddie House. Man. Does anyone really think that bringing in Stephon Marbury to take some little-guy minutes away from Eddie is a good idea right now? Anyone except Starbury, that is?

People aren't going to the Garden to see basketball games these days. They're going to watch helpless individuals devoured by lions. Such was the fate of the Dallas Mavericks yesterday; they're a good team, not a great one, and were torn limb-from-limb by a hungry, determined, focused Celtics team. Thumbs down, Dirk Nowitzki, thumbs down.

Both our local winter teams were on the road yesterday. Let's join them, in spirit at least, because anywhere on earth must be more pleasant and hospitable than this poorly-located snow-choked city we call home.

Maybe the Celtics took a page from the Bruins, who fell way behind Buffalo and then blew them out on Wednesday. Maybe KG was rusty after missing a game. Whatever happened, the C's dug themselves a quick 13-2 hole, then spent the rest of the night pounding a ragged-looking Detroit team for a 98-80 win that (as they say) wasn't nearly that close.

Reporting on the Red Sox these days is starting to feel like reporting the weather (80s, humid, thunderstorms, and anyway, what happened to "if you don't like the weather in New England, wait five minutes"? Three months of continued 40 and windy, five nice days, and now two months of continued hot and sticky. I'm Andy Rooney, and this is 60 Minutes.)

Last night was one of the strangest games we've seen in a while at the TDBG. With the unremarkable Clippers in town, the second quarter had a playoff-like intensity to it, with technicals, an ejection, and some really scrappy play. The fourth quarter showed a surprising lineup, as Doc left the second unit (House, Powe, Davis, Posey, Tony Allen) in for almost the entire time. Most surprising of all - the bench played some fantastic defense and better-than-expected offense to close the Clips out.

There's lots of ways to look at it. After 32 good games, we were due for a stinker. Every NBA team is competent and capable of winning any game (well, the Knicks, but you know what we mean). We had serious letdown potential after the Detroit high. Ray Allen and Big Baby were in street clothes.

One of the most remarkable things about the Celtics' remarkable turnaround is that NBA players actually want to come here. You may remember the lure of playing in Boston almost got Reggie Miller off his couch, and now there's talk that future Hall-of-Famer Gary Payton called his agent the other night and said he'd like to come to Boston.

You know the old saying: you can't win 'em all. There are some gentlemen in Foxboro who may disagree, but the theory holds up for the most part. Which the Celtics and their eager fans learned last night at the Garden, as the battle-tested Pistons came in and outlasted the C's for the first home loss of the season.

Today has all the anticipation of postseason award announcements, with all the anxiety of a Law & Order episode. This afternoon, George Mitchell's going to go public with his steroid report. There's all kinds of stuff in there about making improvements to testing and recommendations for ways to keep this from happening in the future, but all anyone really cares about is the "naming names" part of the process. Who will be implicated? Sources say...
