It started with a welcome sight: the Celtics playing at home for the first time in months and months (it seemed). It had a great moment when Eddie House came back, if you can call it back, since he hadn't missed any home games, and got and gave back all appropriate love from the Garden crowd. And, most importantly, it ended with a win, as the Celtics survived another big-lead-giveaway and held on to beat the Knicks 110-106.

Sure, the Lakers were shorthanded, missing a future Hall-of-Famer whose basket beat the Celtics in Boston back in January. But the Celtics were shorthanded, too, with one backup PG en route to the Knicks and the new one on his way to join the team out West. So the C's sympathize. more ›
Eddie House knows how this goes. You don't play on eight teams in ten years without understanding the business. You don't spend the early part of your career getting waived by chumps like the Bucks and Bobcats, only to find yourself a key rotation guy on a championship team, without realizing that basketball is a crazy world. And since he seems to internalized the fact that he'll be a Knick later today - "I have friends that I will have for the rest of my life on this team, but it’s life. It’s not the end of the world" - we're glad he's OK with it. Since we're still not sure if we are or not. more ›
The Boston Celtics needed a 24-14 surge in the fourth quarter to beat the New Jersey Nets, 96-87, on Friday night. The Nets led the game 73-72 after three quarters, which necessitated the furious comeback in the first place. Color us underwhelmed at this victory. Yes, the 4-45 Nets who sit 27.5 games out of first place in the Atlantic division and have won one road game on the 2009-2010 schedule forced the Celtics into a fourth-quarter rally to improve to 32-16. With Paul Pierce sitting out a second-straight game, scoring in the stretch fell to Eddie House, who scored all 10 of his points in the fourth quarter to spark the comeback. more ›
Eddie House wants to be in the 3-point contest at the NBA All Star Weekend in Dallas, so much so that he is shoveling off the line to make it rain in the snow. Rather fittingly, Tori Amos' "Winter" played on our Pandora as we wrote this post. We get a little warm in our heart when we think of Eddie, and we wonder if he likes Tori. (He certainly forgot his mittens.) more ›
So said Bruins coach Claude Julien, and it's a lesson that his boys took to heart 3,000 miles away. Back home, it's a message that didn't really sink in. Let's start with the good news. more ›
One team's up, one team's down. One team is charging into the new year even with injuries, one has two stars out and is floundering. Our whole city is Even Steven today. more ›
So said Jonathan Papelbon afterwards. And if you're one of the millions who figured that (hour-long rain delay) + (10-1 lead) = (bedtime), we understand. Unfortunately, among the snoozing millions were the Sox bullpen, who turned a 10-1 lead into a devastating 11-10 loss in no time. This was ugly. more ›
We're not going to talk too much more about yesterday's big news. Bill Simmons gets really sad, and Dan Shaughnessy must be trapped under something; it's the only explanation why he's not on Page One and all over this. The Red Sox react. Other than that, let's move on until the news breaks that Manny actually was trying to get pregnant. more ›
It's tied. But not in the way you'd expect. Sure, Ray Allen had a good shooting night, and Rajon Rondo notched his third triple-double in the playoffs - those are the kinds of things you expect to see in a win, especially one as lopsided as last night's 112-94 triumph. more ›
Well, that was a letdown. more ›
Eddie House. Man. Does anyone really think that bringing in Stephon Marbury to take some little-guy minutes away from Eddie is a good idea right now? Anyone except Starbury, that is? more ›
People aren't going to the Garden to see basketball games these days. They're going to watch helpless individuals devoured by lions. Such was the fate of the Dallas Mavericks yesterday; they're a good team, not a great one, and were torn limb-from-limb by a hungry, determined, focused Celtics team. Thumbs down, Dirk Nowitzki, thumbs down.

Both our local winter teams were on the road yesterday. Let's join them, in spirit at least, because anywhere on earth must be more pleasant and hospitable than this poorly-located snow-choked city we call home. more ›
Maybe the Celtics took a page from the Bruins, who fell way behind Buffalo and then blew them out on Wednesday. Maybe KG was rusty after missing a game. Whatever happened, the C's dug themselves a quick 13-2 hole, then spent the rest of the night pounding a ragged-looking Detroit team for a 98-80 win that (as they say) wasn't nearly that close.

Reporting on the Red Sox these days is starting to feel like reporting the weather (80s, humid, thunderstorms, and anyway, what happened to "if you don't like the weather in New England, wait five minutes"? Three months of continued 40 and windy, five nice days, and now two months of continued hot and sticky. I'm Andy Rooney, and this is 60 Minutes.)

Last night was one of the strangest games we've seen in a while at the TDBG. With the unremarkable Clippers in town, the second quarter had a playoff-like intensity to it, with technicals, an ejection, and some really scrappy play. The fourth quarter showed a surprising lineup, as Doc left the second unit (House, Powe, Davis, Posey, Tony Allen) in for almost the entire time. Most surprising of all - the bench played some fantastic defense and better-than-expected offense to close the Clips out. more ›
There's lots of ways to look at it. After 32 good games, we were due for a stinker. Every NBA team is competent and capable of winning any game (well, the Knicks, but you know what we mean). We had serious letdown potential after the Detroit high. Ray Allen and Big Baby were in street clothes. more ›
One of the most remarkable things about the Celtics' remarkable turnaround is that NBA players actually want to come here. You may remember the lure of playing in Boston almost got Reggie Miller off his couch, and now there's talk that future Hall-of-Famer Gary Payton called his agent the other night and said he'd like to come to Boston. more ›
You know the old saying: you can't win 'em all. There are some gentlemen in Foxboro who may disagree, but the theory holds up for the most part. Which the Celtics and their eager fans learned last night at the Garden, as the battle-tested Pistons came in and outlasted the C's for the first home loss of the season. more ›
Today has all the anticipation of postseason award announcements, with all the anxiety of a Law & Order episode. This afternoon, George Mitchell's going to go public with his steroid report. There's all kinds of stuff in there about making improvements to testing and recommendations for ways to keep this from happening in the future, but all anyone really cares about is the "naming names" part of the process. Who will be implicated? Sources say... more ›
TO: The Rest of the NBA (address not shown) FROM: The Little Nine (littlenine@celtics.com) RE:Remember Us? --- Hi everyone. It's the Little Nine here. You know, the "supporting cast" that was going to be the one thing holding the "Big Three" back from romping all over the NBA this year? Almost to a man, the papers and the Internet said that Pierce, Allen and Garnett would play well, but they had no support and no... more ›
Any objective observer would agree that last night's game was a game the Celtics honestly didn't deserve to win. They didn't shoot well, they looked tired after the Laker game, and they were facing a Bobcat team that may have no identity whatsoever, but played with spunk and energy the whole time. Things looked especially dismal down two with five seconds to go. Paul Pierce missed a game-tying shot, and Charlotte got the rebound. Boston... more ›
You may have heard that the Patriots are undefeated, the only team so remaining in the NFL, and are causing many a sleepless night among the '72 Dolphins champagne brigade. It may not be as flashy - it may not even last 'til tomorrow - but the Boston Celtics enjoy a similar distinction. With their brushing off of the Hawks last night, combined with the Clippers' (!) loss to Detroit, the C's begin today as... more ›
The Celtics are pleased to announce that they've added an extra level to the bandwagon, and it's poised to start its run tonight at the Garden against Washington. This is the original bandwagon, mind you; not the auxiliary bandwagons the team expects to roll out over the course of the season. Naysayers (and there are some) point out that the supporting cast around Ghidorah is untested and unreliable. OK, whatever. So their starting point guard,... more ›
Not every day can be that exciting in the sports world. Today will be pretty good: the Sox open a series in Baltimore, the Patriots play their first exhibition game, and Gillette Stadium is preparing for the Sunday arrival of David Beckham. Yesterday...nothing. Well, there was a little excitement. New Celtics Eddie House and Scot Pollard faced the media, and Bostonist already likes Pollard. "Getting Kevin Garnett here was a big deal, but with us... more ›
