Now that filmmakers have rediscovered Boston, the city wants to take advantage of it by building a movie studio in Weymouth, the Herald's Scott Van Voorhis reports: Seeking to build political support and persuade the state to expand existing tax credits, a team of Hollywood film moguls is flying into the Hub this week for meetings with state lawmakers and the development firm that controls the former naval air station in South Weymouth, industry sources......

Art Somerville's Nave Gallery has brought us thoughtful installations before, but their new "Ghost Town" sounds positively compelling. Artists imagine our earth in a process of transformation, with cities growing and shrinking, populations moving, people interacting with nature, and everything cycling both naturally and unnaturally toward growth, decay, and chaos. Might sound like a bunch of hippie nonsense, but we think it makes for some appealing art. "Ghost Town" runs through March 21 at......

Cloverfield whupped on its competition at the box office this weekend and set a record for January. As Reel Hub noted on Friday, people couldn't decide if they loved it or hated it, which means the movie was at least interesting. 27 Dresses seemed like the kind of movie Julia Roberts would have turned down back in the days when she was shooting all those bridal movies like Runaway Bride and My Best Friend's Wedding.......

-- The Boston Police Department's news brief headline summed this one up perfectly with "With Friends Like These...Who Needs Enemies": East Boston guy goes out with his friend on Monday afternoon. Friend goes back to guy's house, breaks through the window and steals some of the guy's toys (iPod, digital camera, PlayStation). When guy confronts friend about the theft, friend smashes guy's digital camera right in front of him. Bostonist says guy needs new friends.......

While all those Midwest folks are placing their bets on the home town team, we'll be sitting tight watching commercials and betting some squares like we just don’t care. Just like we don't care because we don't, the Pats are already out. So we're in it to win it with the boys of summer this year. Pitchers and Catchers report in about two weeks on February 17. Sometime between now and then the equipment truck......

Breaking into December and we've finally seen snow. It was brief. If you slept in this morning you likely missed it. Since the cold weather seems like it might finally be upon us we're looking for a way to stay warm. A sure fire way to keep the blood running warm through your veins is to check out a packed rock show with a couple hundred of your closest friends. The local show pick......

Bostonist already mentioned to you that the Diabolical Biz Markie will be playing at Axis this evening, but damn, we really need to exhort you to go. Part of it is that people need to realize that the Biz is so much more than just "Just a Friend." He's given the world many other hip hop hits, among which we must mention "The Vapors," the whimsical (but so true) "Pickin' Boogers," and "Nobody Beats the......

In a world where there's nothing to do but watch movies. In a city full of theaters, museums, and libraries. One moviegoer who can be in three places at once. This week, Boston's movie theaters offer a variety of giant monsters (fire-breathing turtles, radioactive lizards, skyscraper-climbing apes), smaller monsters (teenagers on myspace, paintball enthusiasts), and a terrifying alternate universe where everyone sings with R. Kelly's voice. Wednesday 4/26 King Kong & Godzilla Triple Feature A......

It’s in these bleak days of March when you realize that winter is far from over. So, like most Bostonians, Bostonist takes to the local pubs to warm up and forget that there is a snowstorm on the way. Our Gothamist friends might be talking about a mysterious maple syrup scent in the city, but you might be wondering why a berry smell is wafting in from the waterfront. Well, the folks over at our......

There are all sorts of celebrations going on this week. One year anniversaries, EP releases and, well, we threw in some alt-country just to spice it up a little bit. Bostonist is looking forward to to warmer weather, but until then we know where they might be heating things up on stages around the Hub. Some of the great shows you might find a pair or two of Bostonist's ears this week. Monday 2/20: The......

Here at Bostonist headquarters, the staff may not agree on whether Valentine's Day is legit or whether it is just the creation of a card company to create a profit, (mostly due to the relationship status of the individual), but we do love music and have compiled some suggestions for you and yours on this special day. Find below a few suggestions from our staff for your evening of love, like, or lust. Josh......

We’ve been digging out all day. After we held our ground on the second floor yesterday only to find that our exterior door was all but snowed shut when it was time to go to work this morning. A bit of shoveling later we’re turning to warm hearts not cold snow. There's a good week ahead of us, temperatures are due to rise, indoors and out. Dinner reservations are hard to come by for tomorrow,......

In this city of ridiculously high rents and $10 drinks, Bostonist is frequently broke. We're lucky to have an amazing live music scene and lots of artsy and cultural happenings to choose from, but it can be tough to do without a serious hit to our wallet. Penny-pinching does have its rewards though, because we're always on the lookout for fun and free (or very cheap) events. As Bostonist previously noted, Boston's colleges and universities......

If you’re not in the mood for political shop talk you can skip the Russert presentation at the JFK library and head on over to a presentation by Roger Steffens in honor of what would be Bob Marley’s 60th birthday. Steffens and the Berklee College of Music’s "The Music and Life of Bob Marley" class will present a multimedia presentation at David Friend Recital Hall. The presentation is rumored to include clips from Steffen’s collection......
