Cold War Kids played the area twice last weekend, Friday night at the Middle East Downstairs, and Saturday at Northampton’s Pearl Street Nightclub. Both shows sharply contrasted with the California-based indie rockers’ gig at Great Scott last fall, most notably in terms of the crowd. The Great Scott show felt like a house party, complete with technical glitches that the small-but-dedicated crowd, most of whom probably read about the band on an MP3 blog, or saw them open for Tapes ‘N Tapes last spring, happily ignored. After addiction to Cold War Kids set in following their last stint in the area, Bostonist was dragged to the band’s sold-out gigs – hence the weekend o’ Cold War Kids.
Because Akon obviously isn't getting enough exposure these days, Congress threw their weight around and has all but boxed the little guy out of providing radio service to rabid fans. Ever since midi files essentially died and MP3s rose from the ashes, streaming audio has been a source for many to listen to and discover new bands via the Internet. Locally, Sooz has been creating and updating Exploit Boston Radio featuring all local bands, all the time. Bostonist first discovered the Casual Lean, the Snowleopards, and Bang Camaro while tuning in to the Internet stream. But today, along with a Boston Globe article on the subject, Sooz announced that there might not be a long future for Exploit Boston Radio if the current royalty hikes take hold. They'd force a minimum of $500 in fees for even the tiniest of stations, for big stations and streams of live radio the sky will be the limit for their required royalty payment.
This past September something innovative happened in Boston. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum launched a webcast. It wasn't just any webcast, it was a creative commons licensed release of concerts performed as part of the long standing museum concert series. It's allowed users world wide to take in a little classical music culture by downloading the file and playing it on their iPod, in the windows media center or whatever MP3 compatible device they choose....
All of a sudden we've got winter. The bonus prize is that it came late enough that when we leave work at 5 o'clock there's still natural light – soon enough it will still be light when we reemerge from the commute home underground on the T. Until the next few weeks pass and we can taste the summer concert and festival season in the spring air we'll continue to keep jamming through the...
There’s something about the AM dial. It remains an important medium for all sorts of talk radio and sports, but still gets fuzzy anytime you’re too close to power lines or transformers. Even the MP3 players that include a radio tuner don’t include AM, it’s all frequency modulation, all the time. But for the faithful of the amplitude a new, old, familiar voice will be taking the airwaves in mid-February. On Sunday the Herald told us to hold our breath. Today we can exhale as the deal has been sealed. The artist formerly known as Mr. Speaker will be taking over the 6 to 10 am morning show on AM 680 WRKO. You may now know him now as Justice Obstructer #1 Tommy Finneran.
We just love listening to all the great 'casts out there. Sure, we have to wade through mountains of manure to find the ones worthy of calling our shiny little MP3 player home. Bostonist thinks it might have found one such 'cast: Love and Radio.
Bostonist likes it when we come across a webcast that isn't your typical talk show or music show. In fact, this week we are looking at a 'cast that not only isn't your typical talk show or music show, it isn't a show at all. The 'cast we are reviewing is an informational series for tourists (or others) wanting to know a little bit about this fine city of ours. This week's 'cast is Tourcaster - Boston.
OK Go released a video for Here it Goes Again and it changed the way hipsters everywhere look at treadmills. As fun as their video is, we prefer songs about taking a girl and going to Somerville – especially when their video production budget allows for a bike on a treadmill. OK Go used eight treadmills. Eight! That's some bucks. The new Pernice Brothers song "Somerville" is set to be released on their record due out this fall, “Live a Little.” They've released the video and MP3, and although it may not be clogging the tubes quite yet, it's worth a look and a listen. Ashmont Records strikes again.
Being Bostonians, we know that there are two things that the people of this city become passionate about this time of year: politics and sports. Currently, there is a rather competitive race for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination and, of course, the Sox are in the hunt for the A.L. East title. Surely, there must be a podcast out there that covers both. Well, the gods must be listening, as they have brought us Saint Kermit.
Sometimes we want more from a podcast. Yes, it is nice to listen to some independent music artists, get some financial advice, or get your geek on. But, sometimes we want to be inspired. For those times, we have the Old South Church Sermons from Boston's Old South Church.
DCist is screwed in the event of an oil crisis. Not that we're not all screwed in the event of an oil crisis, just D.C. is more screwed. Don't sell your car yet, District resident, a cabbie can kick you to the curb if he doesn't like your address. Not even Metro can save you now. Londonist experiences the London of the future through the wonders of 3D modeling, but while the 3D guys are...
We haven't really been dripping with anticipation but the deal seems to be sealed. The Red Sox radio coverage will be moving to WBOS WRKO, the AM sister station of WEEI. We were rooting for frequency modulation coverage of the Sox. We liked the FM proposal for coverage as we would have been able to pick games on our FM-capable MP3 player, and wouldn’t have to resort to the mono handheld our dad gave us ten years ago because, well, it was too old for him to use. The deal will re-up the Red Sox coverage on the AM stations owned by Entercom Communications Corp for 10 years. The deal means that not only will Sox coverage come from an AM station but WBOS will remain the loveably wonderful adult rock favorite and won’t become another sports destination on the radio dial. The biggest news from the deal is in the offer of ownership rights. The Red Sox now have an option to buy a stake in the WRKO station. If we could manage this fuzzy math we'd tell you exactly how much the New York Times company, which owns the Boston Globe, would own of WRKO. We do know they own 17% of the Boston MLB franchis. In turn the Sox would own a part of WRKO (stemming from the 10 year contract), and all told those percentages still won’t add up for the print media conglomerate who will most likely remain second to the Boston Herald for our main stream media buck. Well, at least if someone forced us to actually buy the Herald.
Today we spent the day appreciating how much immigrants affect our daily lives. A sign hand-printed and posted in a local bodega's window read “Closed May 1st. A Day Without Immigrants. We are all immigrants.” Some of the best music has immigrated its way to the United States from places far and wide. Where would this week's lineup be without the rich flavor of the immigrant community? Music knows no borders. Let the decibels...

Lent, what a time to give something up. Over here at Bostonist Headquarters we're thinking hard what we're going to drop come Wednesday. It won't be our MP3 player and it won't be live music. Maybe with this, week four of the now weekly music pick running on Monday we're going to be able to give up our lack of coverage of the local music scene. With fingers crossed we're raising a pint to forty days and forty nights with local music somewhere on the agenda.
There’s the Duck Tour, the Trolley Tour (we’re not talking Green Line), Park Service Docents, the Freedom Trail, and dozens of biking and walking tours of the city. Steven Tyler may be local, but Bostonist has already seen the Old State House and we can’t be wasting our precious cell phone minutes to listen to him talk about it. With our attempt to find out some of those local hidden historical markers, we were very happy to find this “Hidden Historical Mania-in-a-can.” When Bostonist once again welcomes the parents to town for the Holidays this year, we’re sending them out, bundled up, for our new favorite tour of Boston. AudisseyGuides, produced by Robert Pyles. An intrepid, Boston-native, twenty-something entrepreneur, Pyles has pulled together a 27-stop tour of historic downtown Boston for sites we’ve passed by a thousand times and, now, will never think of the same way again.
Sample these tracks and let us know what's in your iPod playlist this week.
| Flaming Lips | Rock Late Night Tales [Purchase] Nothing better than the most recent cd from the Flaming Lips. Bostonist Joel swears by this most recent installation which includes Bjork, Aphex Twins, Nick Drake, and Radiohead. |
So soon we forget. When a record gets to the end (and there’s no auto-return on your phonograph) the stylus skips along the cardboard middle. When a cassette tape gets to the end of a side as you’ve got it lodged in your walkman it clicks a little as the gears slip while they try and advance. A CD player, well, the laser just stops, but a whirring or buzzing sound can often be heard...
A week ago while Bostonist was watching the Red Sox play the Texas Rangers a little window popped up on the computer - an Instant Message from our buddy, saying, "Holy crap, Manny's wearing Oakley Thump glasses in the outfield." "Excuse me?" said Bostonist. "Yeah dude, you know those Oakleys that have the built-in mp3 player? Manny's got those on!" Bostonist's pal replied. How did he know? Well, said friend is blessed to be...
Transit authorities in both cities are warning people to keep iPods in their bags, preferably with your hands on it. Oh, and those little white earbuds are a dead giveaway. Switch them up with something less noticeable and those thieves might think you're listening to a really hip tape walkman. Bostonist is sure that the MBTA just wants passengers to be be smart about all their belongings while riding the wonderful transit system here in Boston. It is wonderful, isn't it?
