Trendsmap Shows Trending Twitter Topics

Trendsmap is an exciting new Twitter mashup that blends Twitter, Google Maps, and What the Trend to create a real life map that shows what's going on near you—or at least what people are tweeting about near you. Not surprisingly, election talk dominated Twitter in the area today, with #bostonelection, @mayortommenino, and @samyoonformayor all near the top. Trendsmap conveniently launches an internal popup to show recent tweets on popular topics. It's an interesting service that might help point you to local trends, assuming you generally live under a rock, in which case you are probably not on Twitter anyway.

Remember that schedule of public meetings about MBTA fare increases we posted last week? Well, those workshops kick off this afternoon at 4pm at the State House (in the Gardner Auditorium). Bostonist plans to attend and send updates on the good stuff via Twitter, so start following us on Twitter to get the latest and greatest on the potential fare hikes. (We suppose that resignation thing might come up, too.) If you're not the Twitter type, don't worry; we'll write up a summary of the meeting for you once it's over. Information galore!

Sox-Less Sports Update

The Sox are in the Bronx and appear to be in a bit of turmoil. There is plenty of non-Sox news out there to occupy your mind. Glen "Big Baby" Davis is living down to his nickname. He is lingering in restricted free agent limbo and it's taking a toll on the amiable big guy. He dropped some mercenary lingo on WEEI on Monday. He actually told Jeff Goodman "I’m going wherever someone wants to pay for my services," which is realistic and, frankly, necessary in the 21st century NBA, but not something loyal Celtics fans want to hear.

Bite Size News, August 4: John Quincy Adams/Twitter Edition

  • John Quincy Adams was ready for Twitter 200 years ago. His diary entries will finally become tweets. [AP via Boston.com]
  • A survey released today reveals a predictable yet disappointing racial divide in opinions on the Henry Louis Gates Jr. arrest controversy. [Boston Globe]

The Massachusetts Historical Society, realizing that Minister Plenipotentiary John Quincy Adams's journal entries often add up to fewer than 140 characters, has decided to get the future president a Twitter account. Tweets describing Adams's 1809 journey to Russia will begin going live here beginning on August 5, the 200th anniversary of the trip. The Mass Historical Society will supplement each entry with contextual material and a map—JQA was apparently pretty anal about including latitude and longitude in his diary entries. Empanadas in Worcester on New York Times Best Seller List

Who doesn't love a good empanada? Nobody in Worcester, judging by the success of Empanadas in Worcester on the New York Times Best Seller List. Except, uh, that's a fake best seller list, invented by Harvard grad and Emmy winning TV writer Steve Hely in his new novel How I Became A Famous Novelist, a title that seems suspiciously inspired by Winner of the National Book Award, though we suppose Dave Eggers probably started it all with that goddamn heartbreaker of a book back in 2000. Anyway, this particular list of clever hypothetical book titles (download a full PDF) has inspired a rash of imitations on Twitter, tagged #hely for the author. Perhaps because of our own status as media non-elite and our occasional affection for Wired, we're partial to @mariaschneider's HEAP: Chris Anderson's Guide to Tent Cities and Dumpster Diving for the former Media Elite. We encourage you to submit your own ideas, but always remember: Jockstraps ain't for eating.

Boston rock diva Amanda Palmer sent out an indecent proposal over her Twitter account yesterday: a nude self-portrait, pubes and all, that she encouraged fans to transform into fake Rolling Stone covers. We're a family Web site, so we don't have any of the images to show you here, but take a look at this collection of fan-generated art. It is very NSFW.

The Red Sox have returned home to find out which parts of Fenway haven't washed out to sea in the last two weeks. They'll play the Mariners to begin a 10-game homestand that will take us to the All-Star break; Oakland and Kansas City will follow. Red Sox history will be made tonight, weather permitting, as Tim Wakefield will make his record-breaking 383rd start for the team. Pushing that Clemens uncomfortableness out of the record book. We say "weather permitting", of course, because we've heard that the guys from Seattle are rumbling that Boston is a little too rainy and clammy and cloudy for them. Let's hope for the best.

IFFBoston Review: We Live In Public

Ondi Timoner's We Live In Public is bound to be this century's The Power Broker. While Robert Caro's extensive look at how bureaucrat Robert Moses single handedly restructured the population of Manhattan as a city planner, Timoner's 90-minute documentary about dot-com kid Josh Harris paints Harris as a venerable Nostradamus of the Internet age, a man who predicted the popularity of social networking and lived out its highs and lows years before Facebook was dreamed up at Harvard. The Power Broker became a bestseller, won Caro the Pulitzer Prize, and made a household name out of Moses; We Live In Public won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance this year, will no doubt win over legions of filmgoers, and may just place Harris in the limelight.

Southern Comfort: Tupelo Opens in Inman Square

The Boston food gods are smiling upon us today, for today is the day that Tupelo opens in Inman Square. Billed as "comfort food with a Southern drawl," the restaurant's fare is the product of two of our favorite Boston chefs: Rembs Layman, who's had a heavy hand in the rustic, textured, rich dishes at Matt Murphy's and Pomodoro, among others, and Renee McLeod of Petsi Pies, who's an expert in creating just-like-homemade desserts (if your home had a talented pastry chef living there). The potential of this delicious combo has had area Chowhounds buzzing with anticipation for days.

Lissa Harris denies being behind the keyboard of the Marty Baron Twitter feed. If the feed is to be believed, which it is not, Globe editor Marty Baron is a whale-obsessed, booze-drenched jet-setter with a fondness for grape soda. Funny ha, or funny meh? Sometimes, both.

In a highly scientific study, the often useful BostonTweet named Emerson and BU the most active local schools on Twitter. The study was conducted by asking people who tweets the most. Makes sense, we suppose. Emerson students, grads, and profs pulled out their self-promotion skills to tie for the top spot. Tufts got a fair number of mentions, and a few people pointed out that Suffolk is on Twitter as well. We're a little surprised that high-tech MIT isn't the Massachusetts Institute of Twitter, but maybe the folks over there have some real work to do. Who do you think tweets the most and best in Boston, collegiate or otherwise?

Well we were there and we couldn't really believe it happened. As part of a national press tour, evangelists from Google provided an informal meetup at Cambridge's Enormous Room. I was incredulous as I signed up for the event at Meetup.com - "hey wait a minute", I thought, as I entered my info, "this isn't a Google product or portal, WTF?"

We mentioned the tweets. Now, the websites. If the snow outside (which has actually started now) isn't enough for you, you can make it snow on your computer, too, with SNOWPOCALYPSE. Refresh the site for other fun ways to refer to today's flurries. Our favorite so far may be SNOWNAMI. If that becomes tiring, go the Barack Obama route. Barack Obama... dug you out of the snow? Maybe tomorrow. (Thanks to commenter/Flickrer iMatthew for the tip.)

Well, it was inevitable. A Twitter group has been set up to tweet about today's (as-yet nonexistent) snow. If you're stuck in the house with nothing better to do, or if you're out and about and looking for updates, check the group for the latest snow scoop. Want to participate? Add #snow1219 to your twits—er, tweets. UHub has coined the phenomenon Snowtweeting. There are also Utterli and Flickr groups, as well as a snow poll for those who can't get enough snow-based internet action. That's a lot of stuff about very little snow (so far), and there have already been blog post cancellations to boot.

Weeks after JP Moms reportedly drove a mom to the 'burbs, Twitter Moms are massacring a Motrin ad with their tweets. Jessica Gottlieb started the fight, saying "I wore my baby while you got an MBA," which is apparently supposed to be some kind of insult, though we'd rather get an MBA than wear a baby. MotrinMoms has now eclipsed Obama (sooo passe now that he's elected) as the biggest search on Twitter. The MM tweets are a mix of support and outrage, but there was enough outrage mixed in to make Motrin apologize for the ad and pull it from future use.
